Ceftriaxone is marketed under a brand name called as Rocephin.

This drug is used to cure bacterial infections. Ceftriaxone acts by preventing the formation of bacteria’s cell wall so that the cell wall gets ruptured resulting in the death of bacteria.

Ceftriaxone Side Effects Explained Better:

There are lots of medicines that can causes side effects. In some cases, adverse effects were discovered during FDA tests & were deemed an acceptable risk. In others, the negative effects turn out to be but were not identified until after the drug was extensively used. When side effects of a drug are severe, the dosages may be changed or second drug may be recommended. Dietary or lifestyle changes may also help reduce undesired effects.

Let your doctor know if a patient is younger than 29 days/newborn with jaundice or hyperbilirubinemia & if you are allergic to some Cephalosporin Antibiotics such as- cefprozil, cephalexin etc.

  • Signs of allergic reactions–
    • Swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue
    • Rash
    • Itching
    • Difficulty breathing
    • Hives
    • Tightness in the chest

  • Watery or bloody stools
  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin
  • Seizures
  • Severe diarrhea
  • Stomach cramps or pain
  • Vaginal discharge or irritation

Take this medicine just as suggested by your physician. If it is taken in a huge amount than required, it will cause some unpleasant effects for sure. You must try to get medical help as soon as you ingest more of this medicine.

Ceftriaxone Drug Interaction Side Effects (Due to Reaction with Other drugs)-

If you are taking some drugs that are prescribed by other doctor, alcohol, minerals, vitamins, tobacco, some herbal products etc you must inform your doctor about them before you start consuming Ceftriaxone so that drug interaction could not occur. Report to your doctor if you are taking these drugs-

  • Calcium containing IV medicines such as-
    • Ringer’s solution
    • Parenteral nutrition

Severe and sometimes fatal kidney and lung problems occur, particularly in newborns when any of the above mentioned drugs is taken with Ceftriaxone due to drug interaction.

  • Aminoglycosides (such as- gentamicin)
  • Cyclosporine
  • Anticoagulants (such as- warfarin)
  • Heparin

Ceftriaxone may increase the risk of above listed medicines’ side effects.

  • Certain live vaccines such as-
    • BCG
    • oral typhoid

Ceftriaxone may reduce effectiveness of above listed vaccines.

Ceftriaxone Prolonged Use Side Effects (When Used for Longer Periods)-

Repeated or prolonged use of Ceftriaxone may cause a second infection. Notify your medical healthcare provider if symptoms of a second infection appear. Your medicine may need to be changed to diagnose the problem..
