Fosamax belongs to a class of drugs known as Bisphosphonates. It is used for the treatment of osteoporosis in women, caused by menopause and to treat osteoporosis in both men and women, caused by increased consumption of steroids. It can also be used for the treatment of Paget’s disease.

Merck & Co., Inc.is the first company to get Fosamax approved by FDA on 29th September, 1995. But its patent expired in 2008. Later Teva and Barr Pharmaceuticals released first generic Fosamax and got it approved by FDA on February 6, 2008. FDA recommended Fosamax as an effective drug for the treatment of osteoporosis of various forms.
