Abilify Mycite, “Digital Pill”, helps doctors to track the drug intake time

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first digital pill that helps doctors track the patient’s medication timing.

Abilify Mycite or aripiprazole with sensor is a digital pill that comes with an integrated sensor. These sensors send messages to the wearable patch, which helps in determining the time of taking the medication by patients. The sensors help doctors to track medication time with a smartphone.

FDA told that Abilify got its first approval in 2012, and now, it is approved for the treatment of diseases like schizophrenia, manic depression and bipolar disorder.
Dr. Mitchell Mathis, Director Division of Psychiatry Products, said that the ability to track the ingestion of medication is highly beneficial in patients with mental illness.

FDA said that the Abilify Mycite did not prove to help in improve patients’ compliance related to consuming medicine on time prescribed by the doctor.

A warning has been stated on the box of Abilify Mycite, according to which, elderly people with dementia are at an increased risk of death if they consume this drug. Using this medication also enhances the risks of suicidal thoughts and behavioral changes among teens.
