When a person inhales air, it travels through the trachea into the lungs, through two large bronchial tubes. These tubes divide into several smaller branches known as bronchioles, inside the lungs. These bronchioles end in the clusters of air sacs known as alveoli. These alveoli have significantly thin walls full of blood capillaries. Emphysema causes rupture of alveoli, decreased surface area for gaseous exchange and a reduced number of alveoli in the lungs.

General symptoms of emphysema are wheezing, shortness of breath, frequent respiratory infections, fatigue, reduced appetite and weight loss. These symptoms can range from mild, moderate to being severe. It is most common among the people who smoke but several cases are also due to a rare genetic condition.
