Generic name of this medicine is Cefuroxime. It is sold under a brand name known as Ceftin.

Cefuroxime is a part of the group of medicines known as cephalosporin antibiotics. It acts by killing bacteria in our body. Cefuroxime is used to diagnose many types of bacterial infections including life-threatening or severe forms.

Well, many people do not experience all of the unwanted effects listed. Side effects are often expected in terms of duration & onset. Most interesting part is that unpleasant effects are always reversible & will fade away after the treatment is complete. There are lots of options help prevent or minimize side effects.

Side effects have been divided into some groups on the basis of drug interaction, overdose, prolonged use of medicines, and severity (such as – frequent & infrequent).

Frequent Ceftin Side Effects (Commonly Seen)-

Less serious side effects may include:

  • Feeling restless, hyperactive or irritable
  • Stomach pain
  • Hyperactive or feeling restless
  • Vomiting, nausea
  • Mild diarrhea
  • Unpleasant or strange taste in your mouth
  • Drowsiness
  • Tight or stiff muscle
  • Dizziness
  • Skin rash or mild itching
  • Sores or white patches inside the mouth or on lips
  • Upset stomach, gas
  • Vaginal discharge or itching
  • Diaper rash in an infant while taking liquid cefprozil
  • Swelling or joint pain
  • Runny nose or a cough
  • Headache

If your symptoms do not improve in the course of time, check with your doctor the sooner the better.

Infrequent Ceftin Side Effects (Professional Point of View)-

  • Chills, fever, body aches
  • Diarrhea that is bloody or watery
  • Pounding or fast heartbeats
  • Chest pain
  • Blood in your urine
  • Pale or yellowed skin
  • Dark colored urine
  • Flu symptoms
  • Convulsions (seizure)
  • Weakness or confusion
  • Unusual bleeding
  • Fever
  • Signs of jaundice-
    • Yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Severe tingling, muscle weakness, numbness, pain
  • Sore throat, fever & headache with severe red skin rash, peeling & blistering
  • Swelling
  • Feeling short of breath
  • Uncontrolled thirst
  • Urinating less than usual & sometimes not at all
  • Weight gain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Bruising, skin rash
  • Painful or difficult urination
  • Symptoms of allergic reactions-
    • Hives
    • Swelling of face, mouth, lips, throat or tongue
    • Itching

Ceftin Overdose Side Effects (Require Immediate Medical Attention)-

Overdose symptoms may include-

  • Seizure (convulsions or blackout)

As soon as you notice these symptoms, you must contact PCC (poison control center) or your doctor immediately.

Ceftin Drug Interaction Side Effects (Due to Reaction with Other drugs)-

Drug interactions may occur due to lack of knowledge about various active ingredients that are involved in the relevant substances. So it is important to shun drug interactions due to unpredicted outcomes. Inform your doctor if you are using any of these drugs-

  • A blood thinner such as-
    • Warfarin (Coumadin)
  • A diuretic/water pill such as-
    • Furosemide (Lasix)
    • Hydrochlorothiazide (hydrodiuril, Zestoretic, Hyzaar, Vasoretic)
    • Indapamide (Lozol)
    • Spironolactone (Aldactone, Aldactazide)
    • Metolazone (Mykrox, Zarxolyn)
    • Bumetanide (Bumex)
    • Torsemide (Demadex)
  • A drug that reduces stomach acid, such as-
  • Ranitidine (Zantac)
  • An antacid
  • Omeprazole (Prilosec)
  • Cimetidine (Tagamet)
  • Famotidine (Pepcid)
  • Probenecid (Benemid)

Ceftin Prolonged Use Side Effects (When Used for Longer Periods)-

If a medicine is used for a long time, it will affect our body system for sure. Well, no side effects have been seen so far but it does not mean they cannot be appeared. You should visit your doctor regularly & follow his/her directions like when to increase or decrease the dose of a medicine or start & halt taking this drug.
